Imation Expands Brand Distribution Portfolio with New Lower-Priced X Tape Media for VXA-2 Drives
SINGAPORE (November 4, 2004) — Imation Corp. (NYSE: IMN), a worldwide leader in removable data storage media, announced it will expand the Exabyte brand media distribution portfolio to include Exabyte’s new VXA Packet X Tape Cartridges. Designed for small and mid-sized businesses that require reliable, high capacity data storage at a lower cost, this new line of X media is available in 20, 40 and 80GB (native) capacities and is compatible with VXA-2 drives, and engineered for compatibility with next-generation VXA-3 drives, scheduled for mid-2005 availability.
VXA X Tape offers the scalability of three different cartridge capacities for the same drive and compatibility with the current and next generation drive. The VXA X Tape Family includes X6 media with 20/40 GB capacity (native/compressed), X10 media with 40/80 GB capacity, and X23 media with 80/160 GB capacity, and provides users the flexibility to choose the capacity that best meets their current storage and budget needs with the ability to add capacity on demand, simply by using higher capacity VXA Tapes.
"Our VXA Packet Technology is a powerful solution for the fast growing small and mid-sized server markets that require high-capacity, high-performance data backup and disaster recovery solutions at an affordable price,” said Bob Ariniello, vice president of Exabyte’s Customer Unit. “The Packet Technology coupled with our drives, automation, and media, create the complete solution for the data storage needs of this market.”
"Imation is committed to delivering the broadest portfolio of advanced removable data storage media products to the market," said Ron Zinke, vice president, sales and marketing, Imation. “By adding Exabyte’s VXA X tape cartridges to our distribution portfolio, we are able to provide the small medium business market a powerful storage solution that offers higher capacity, faster transfer speed and longer tape life compared to DDS tape cartridges, at a cost-competitive price."
Every VXA X Tape provides up to 43 GB per hour transfer speed that completes backup and restore operations in half the time as DDS. X Tapes are also the only tape cartridges that utilize VXA Packet Technology, which enables PerfectWrite™ and 4-level Error Correction Code (ECC) for up to 180x greater restore integrity than DDS. Tapes with VXA Packet Technology also enable variable speed operation, which completely eliminates back-hitching and the resulting stretching and wear that is common with other inferior technologies. The tapes, which use advanced metal particulate (AME) media, have been extreme-tested by independent labs under the most severe conditions – including violent vibration, immersion in volcanic dust, water and hot coffee, and even freezing cartridges in a block of ice – to help ensure reliable and complete data restores.
