Imation Submits LTO Ultrium 3 Samples For Initial Media Compliance Testing

Imation accelerates LTO Ultrium Generation 3 media commercialization as it enters into data interchange compliance verification.

SINGAPORE (August 17, 2004) - Imation Corp (NYSE: IMN), a worldwide leader in removable data storage media, today announced it submitted its first LTO Ultrium format generation 3 sample lot for media compliance testing. With the implementation of its new Tera Ångstrom™ technology, customers and OEM partners can rely on Imation to further MP (metal particulate) tape technology development with a focus on quality and excellence in manufacturing.

“Utilizing our terabyte-class magnetic tape manufacturing facility, Imation is well positioned to meet the requirements for future high capacity tape cartridges like the LTO Ultrium technology format,” said Colleen Willhite, vice president and general manager, Imation Corp. “We are committed to completing the media compliance verification testing process to prepare for product commercialization.”

The LTO Program requires all licensees to pass a series of compliance verification tests before being issued a license and the right to display the trusted LTO Ultrium trademark. Compliance testing of all LTO Ultrium products must be completed annually to ensure that all manufacturers adhere to the LTO Ultrium format specifications.

“In addition to producing a compliance-verified product, Imation’s state-of-the-art manufacturing capability supports increased areal densities, thinner substrates, tighter head-tape interface tolerances and higher tape speeds that result in the media surface smoothness and uniformity required to reach higher capacities with a faster time-to-market,” added Willhite.

On July 27, Imation announced it applied for the LTO Ultrium generation 3 license. The LTO Ultrium generation 3 media license provides format specifications and guidelines for interchangeability. Securing the LTO Ultrium generation 3 license and submitting samples to the LTO Technology independent testing entity reinforces Imation’s commitment to advanced magnetic tape technologies leading to terabyte-plus capacities.
